Need a last minute dessert idea for Valentine’s day? I got another super easy recipe for you if you need to whip up something quick but also presentable. You can do this the day before — therefore, one less thing to worry about on Valentine’s day!
Yes, I used a heart shaped container on purpose to make this dessert. Well, it’s Valentine’s day, and making food and desserts in heart shapes makes it so much more presentable, and whoever receives it will also be impressed.
There are two layers: panna cotta and strawberry jelly. Best of both worlds right?
The key to making this dessert successful: lightly coat the container with oil (I used vegetable oil), and make sure the first layer is completely cooled, chilled, and set, BEFORE adding the second layer. Do not, I repeat, do NOT add the second layer onto the first layer when it is still hot, or else it will cause the first layer to slightly melt. The second layer that you add on top should be cooled first.
Ingredients
Panna Cotta:
- 2.5 tsp powdered gelatin
- 500ml heavy cream
- 100ml milk
- 1/3 cup sugar
Strawberry Jelly:
- 2.5 tsp powdered gelatin
- 1 package (10.1g) of strawberry Jell-O mix
- 250ml boiling water
- 250ml cold water
- 1/4 cup sugar
- Chopped fresh strawberries
Instructions
Panna Cotta:
1. Lightly coat the container that you’ll be making this dessert in with oil (I used vegetable oil). This step is crucial, or else you won’t be able to unmold the whole thing by the end.
2. Sprinkle the gelatine onto the milk and briefly mix it together. Set aside to allow the gelatine to dissolve.
3. In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk the heavy cream and sugar together until almost boiling and small bubbles appear. Whisk in the gelatine milk mixture. Make sure there are no lumps.
4. Sieve the mixture so that it’ll be silky smooth. Set aside to cool for 5 minutes, and pour into a mold/container (make sure your mold is lightly coated with oil to unmold easily). Let it cool down to room temperature and then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours until it has set.
Strawberry Jelly:
1. In a bowl, add the boiling water to the gelatine and jello mix and stir until completely dissolved. Then stir in the cold water. Leave to cool for about 10 minutes (don’t skip this step).
2. Set aside 1 cup of the mixture and add in the chopped fresh strawberries and stir.
3. Pour the jello mixture into the mold, on top of the panna cotta (when the panna cotta has set). Then pour in the remaining 1 cup of the strawberry jello mixture on top. Use a spoon/ladle to swirl around the mixture to make sure the strawberries are distributed evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours until it has set.
Before Serving:
Fill a large bowl (or sink) with hot water (it should be larger than your mold) and place your mold in the water for about 5 seconds (jelly part facing up). DO NOT submerge the jelly! Put a plate over the jelly and turn it upside down to slowly lift off your mold. Serve and enjoy!
